i picked this dress up last week on an even slightly better sale at the neiman marcus last call outlet store. it’s a gorgeous color and fit, and while i do love the way it is styled here with a blazer and tights, i am excitedly envisioning it instead for a summer wedding.
TALES IN DISCOUNT LUGGAGE SHOPPING
this post may be wholly uninteresting to some, but i think i’ve gained some shopping knowledge worth sharing. my most recent shopping project and conquest, you ask? no, not dresses or shoes or even pretty stationary or nail polish. luggage! i don’t travel much for work, and so my travel lately has been reduced to a few big trips a year and a bunch of long weekends. the long weekends i seem consistently well equipped for, what with chic weekender bags seemingly proliferating from within my closet (and from under my bed.) the longer trips however are another story - i have been relying on one wheeled duffel for at least eight years that stood the test of a few meandering treks through europe and the middle east, have been dragged up and down stairs, in hostels, motels, hotels, resorts, and kind folks’ homes. it was time to upgrade from something still probably functional, but very weary and quite collegiate. BF is also in the market for luggage, as on our last big trip a few months ago, we retrieved his suitcase from the baggage claim with a giant gash through its top. so i set out on the mission.
wants: reliable, reputable, timeless, modern, convenient, roomy, stylish but not fashiony (this is luggage after all and i know when enough is enough), and inexpensive. i also wanted something that i might be able to add matching pieces to later.
since something that would last for years and hold up nicely was my top priority, i narrowed my search to the classic brands that are known for reliable classic luggage (delsey, atlantic, travelpro, samsonite.) since i needed cost-effective, i ruled out tumi as well as hartmann and brics (though i have seen a few ruelala and gilt sales on both hartmann and brics of late, i couldn’t find just what i needed), as spending anywhere in the thousand dollar range for a suitcase just wasn’t something i could stomach.
for modern conveniences, i decided that a four wheel spinner was the way to go, and aesthetically, i ruled out hardside luggage (too futuristic for my tastes).
my first looks: macy’s and bloomingdales. bloomingdales had some deals on delsey bags that i was interested in…i spotted a 29inch upright spinner on sale in a funny shade of blue for $240. a comparable model in olive green or black (my color preferences) would run me $400. at macy’s, department store sale king, i saw different models of 29 or 30 inch samsonite spinners on sale from $230 to full price at $600. i saw similar delsey options to bloomies, with the exception of one model on closeout sale for $120 that had reviews that left me weary (tipping over with just a few items inside!?). travelpro and american tourister $250 to $400 range, but the aesthetics were leaving something to be desired for me. i liked a victorinox piece on sale for $330. a calvin klein suitcase i liked the look of at $270 but with a dreadful review that just reinforced my thought to stick to brands that historically are luggage makers and leave out the fashion designers.
i spent some time browsing luggageonline.com and ebags.com… some deal prices got lower there. i saw delsey and samsonite pieces i liked on final sales for under $200. things were looking up.
i decided a trip to the local outlets was worth a peek, as i knew they had a samsonite outlet, as well as other luggage discount stores. what a bust! the samsonite outlet had “deals” like ‘buy one, get the second piece half off’, but the first piece i was considering was at least $350, so the deal possibilities were limited. i didn’t waste much time. i did happen into the marshalls adjacent to the outlet mall and some plenty of junk with a few interesting options at some very good prices thrown in. in burlington coat factory, i found a black samsonite rolling garment bag on sale for $89.99. we have discussed this as a need (not really the absolute need, but a side one), so we snapped this up, but left without our full size pieces.
with that success in mind, i hit up my local TJ maxx, and amongst the picked over racks, i found a luggage section with at least six different options of 29 inch samsonite spinners! and get this - each one was listed at $120 or less! the model names were ones i had trouble looking up in my phone, but i compared pictures and found a few that appeared close to the xSpace, hyperspace and LIFT lines. then i remembered that we just bought the black garment bag (also samsonite), and that if i stuck with black and samsonite…i could make a haphazardly matching luggage family. my favorite (which magically happened to have TWO in stock) was a black 29 inch spinner with the model name eilat (like the beach city in israel, yes) that seems to be comparable to the xSpace model, which i had found marked the lowest anywhere for about $199. these were 99.99 each - how amazing, right?! and there were two, so now BF and i can now have pleasantly matching pieces. i took them, after much zipping, unzipping, rezipping and deliberating, and learned how easy spinners are when i wheeled them without any issue to the car by myself.
the lesson: in the market for mid-priced luggage? check your local discount stores (marshalls, tj maxx, burlington, etc), and check back again! they may only have a few pieces at a time, but their prices for great brands can really be unbeatable (even vs. outlets and discount retailers online!).
we now have three new sleek modern black samsonite pieces (that means a ten year samsonite warranty) forming a matching set all for just under $300 total!
happy bargain hunting and happy travels!
spring break trips? okay we’re grown-ups, right? spring get-aways?
whatever you have planned, if it involves a beach, pool, yacht, lounge chair, sheep’s meadow in central park on a blanket during one of these freakish 75 degree march days…

i know, i know i’ve been missing for weeks.
as per my usual, i am making a comeback with a dress…
this dress from rebecca taylor to be specific.
i spotted this exact dress at nordstrom rack in union square on friday in a sand beige color for $140. a great deal. i tried it on, loved the dress, the fit, the color… the only thing that held me back was that it seemed a little on the wrinkled side. if you happen to have a clothes steamer at home, or are one of those ladies i envy who manages not to crush her dresses against each other in a jam-packed closet, then i think this dress is perfect. i think in beige it would be ideal for springtime showers (bridal, baby, take your pick) or in the navy it is more of a year-round staple.
